How to Learn AI in 2026: Lessons from Our Free Training in Lekki
We’re currently in the middle of the Hiltop Free Digital Skills Training (HFDST 2.0), a free, 16-day, hands-on digital and AI skills training running from August 1st to 16th at Hiltop Towers in Lekki, Lagos, in partnership with Hiltop International Christian Center. We’re now past the halfway mark, and if you’re wondering how to actually start learning AI seriously, here’s what’s stood out so far.
You Don’t Need to Understand How AI Works to Use It Well
One of the biggest blocks I see with people approaching AI is that they think they need to understand the technology deeply before they can use it. That’s not true, and it’s not how we approached the training.
Instead, we focused on practical application: agentic AI, AI for business, and how to actually put these tools to work in a business or career. You learn by using the tools on real tasks, not by studying theory first.
Learning Alongside Other Practical Skills Makes It Stick
The Lekki training didn’t teach AI in isolation. Alongside Agentic AI and AI for Business, we also covered Remote Work, Cybersecurity, App Development, and Business Branding and Promotion. That combination matters, because AI skills become far more useful when you already understand how to use them inside a real workflow, whether that’s running a remote job, protecting a business online, or promoting a brand.
If you’re learning AI on your own, don’t learn it in a vacuum. Pair it with a skill or a problem you’re actually trying to solve.
Consistency Beats Intensity
The training runs 10am to 2pm on weekdays and 9am to 4pm on weekends, every single day for 16 days. That consistency is what’s making the difference. Participants who keep coming back day after day are building real ability, not just notes from one exciting session.
If you’re trying to learn AI on your own in 2026, the same principle applies. One long weekend of enthusiasm won’t get you there. Set aside a little time consistently, and practice on real tasks, not just tutorials.
The Opportunity Is Real, But You Have to Show Up for It
