Before you build a website, print business cards, or register a name, there are a few checks worth doing first. They cost you almost nothing, and they can save you months of wasted effort.

1. Validate That People Actually Want It

The biggest mistake founders make is building something they personally think is a great idea, without checking whether real people would actually pay for it. Loving your own idea isn’t validation, someone else’s money is.

How to actually test this: Talk to at least 10 to 15 people who fit your target customer. Don’t ask “would you buy this?”, people are polite and will often say yes to be nice. Instead, ask about their current problems and habits around that need. If they’re already paying for a workaround or complaining about the problem, that’s a real signal. If they’ve never thought about the problem at all, that’s worth paying attention to as well.

2. Check If the Name Is Actually Usable

Before you fall in love with a business name, check three things: whether it’s available to register with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), whether the matching domain name is available, and whether the social media handles are free. A name that’s already taken on all three fronts will cause headaches later, from legal issues to customer confusion.

Quick check: Search the CAC public search portal for name availability, and check domain availability on any domain registrar before settling on a final name.

3. Study Your Competitors Honestly

If nobody else is doing anything similar to your idea, that’s not always a good sign, it can mean there’s no market, not that you’ve found a gap. On the other hand, if there are competitors, don’t panic, study them properly instead.

Look at what they’re doing well, where customers seem unhappy (check their reviews and comments), and what gap you could realistically fill better than they currently do. A crowded market with unhappy customers is often a better opportunity than an empty market with no demand at all.

4. Test It Small Before You Build It Big

You don’t need a full website, a shop, or inventory to start testing a business idea. Many successful businesses started by testing demand first, a simple landing page, a WhatsApp catalogue, a small batch of product, or a service offered to a handful of people before scaling.

Why this matters: It’s far cheaper to discover your idea needs adjusting when you’ve spent very little, than after you’ve already invested your savings into a full setup.

5. Get Honest Feedback, Not Just Encouragement

Friends and family will usually encourage you no matter what, because they love you, not because they’re your target market. Seek feedback from people who fit your actual customer profile, and specifically ask what would stop them from buying, not just what they like about the idea.

Vetting Isn’t About Killing Your Idea, It’s About Protecting It

Checking a business idea properly before building isn’t about being negative or overly cautious. It’s about spending your time and money on an idea that’s actually been tested, rather than one that only exists in your head.

If you’re validating a business idea and need help with your branding, domain and website setup, or figuring out how to test demand online, that’s exactly what we help with at Webiit Technologies.
